44% in Japan want to keep working after retirement age: survey
Ideas:
There seems to by many reasons by some people want to keep working, but maybe financial reasons are the biggest concern. Of course some want to keep working as a way to feel satisfied and feel that work gives purpose in their lives.
There are going to be some who don't want to continue to work due the fact they just don't like their jobs. But maybe, these days, there are less and less workers feeling that way.
Especially in Japan as people live longer and stay healthy longer and continue to remain mobile, Japan might have a higher proportion of people who want to keep working.
There have been several articles, before, about Japanese people in their 90's who continue to work, part-time at McDonalds and they feel happy and satisficed with their work, and the company feel they contribute a lot.
But it hard to see people in western countries wanting to work in their 90's as maybe some don't have the needed health to keep going.
In South Korea, people now in their 60's outnumber those in their 20's etc., that are looking for work. But the situation might be that they need to work even if they don't want to work.
As Japan is now facing a severe labor shortage, one way to reduce the shortage, is for companies to increase the retirement age and or eliminate the age retirement altogether and allow people to continue to work as long as they want.
But also, companies, after a certain age of 65 or 70 put a cap on the hours or wages for older workers as a way to keep company expenses down.
As long as a worker is healthy and can contribute in a good way there should be no reason for them to stop working.
Of course companies are going to find about how to keep a mix of older workers and younger workers happy with promotions.
A company can find a flexible way to keep both the older workers, who have reached a certain level, and also at the same time, have career management track for younger workers so all can feel important to a company.
Have a nice day and be safe!
