TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's real wages in September rose 2.2 percent from a year earlier, marking the ninth consecutive month of growth, government data showed Friday.

Nominal wages, including base and overtime pay, climbed 4.6 percent to 311,409 yen ($1,960) per worker, the biggest increase since a 6.6 percent rise in January 1997, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said.

Special earnings, including bonuses, surged 32.6 percent, helping drive up overall wages.

The nine-month streak of real wage growth was the longest since a 12-month run from February 2016 to January 2017.

Consumer prices used to calculate real wages rose 2.4 percent in September, down from 3.4 percent a year earlier.

Wage growth continues to outpace inflation, with a ministry official attributing the trend to pay increases secured at this year's spring labor negotiations.

The recent gains follow a 12-month stretch of declining real wages from January to December 2025.

The ministry also released data on summer bonuses. The average bonus paid per worker by establishments that made payments between June and August rose 5.3 percent from a year earlier to 448,765 yen, increasing for the fifth consecutive year.

The share of establishments paying bonuses also edged up, to 74.0 percent from 73.4 percent.
