Japan's wholesale prices rise 6.8% in Sept. amid cost pressures
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's wholesale prices in September rose 6.8 percent from a year earlier amid persistent cost pressures, Bank of Japan data showed Tuesday.
The increase in prices of goods traded between companies slowed from 7.6 percent in August, falling below 7 percent for the first time in four months but remaining unchanged from or higher than those in the first five months of 2026.
The data came as the BOJ weighs the timing of an additional interest rate hike. The central bank has two policy meetings remaining this year, scheduled for Oct. 29-30 and Dec. 17-18.
Import prices surged 24.5 percent from a year earlier, while export prices rose 17.9 percent.
By category, prices rose 40.2 percent from a year earlier for nonferrous metals, 15.3 percent for information and communications equipment, 12.8 percent for plastic products and 11.5 percent for petroleum and coal products.
Agricultural, forestry and fishery products showed a 13.3 percent decline.
"Prices rose from the previous month across a broad range of categories as companies continue to pass on higher raw material and component costs," a BOJ official said. "We will continue to monitor the effects of Middle East tensions, artificial intelligence demand, rising costs and government measures to curb inflation."
