TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Convenience store sales in Japan edged up 0.7 percent in July from a year earlier, supported by promotional efforts such as offering coupons, industry data showed Thursday.

Same-store sales at seven major convenience store operators totaled 1.05 trillion yen ($6.6 billion), according to the Japan Franchise Association.

Average spending per customer grew 2.3 percent to 755.7 yen, with sales of fried food, desserts, snacks and daily-use products faring well.

The number of customer visits fell 1.5 percent to 1.39 billion, marking the 13th consecutive monthly drop, the association said.
