Article:
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's household spending in December fell 1.3 percent from a year earlier for the second consecutive month of decline, as people spent less on residential expenses such as maintenance, according to government data released Tuesday.
Japanese households of two or more people spent an average of 328,114 yen ($2,500), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said. On a seasonally adjusted basis, spending fell 2.1 percent.
The data is a key indicator of private consumption, which accounts for more than half of the country's gross domestic product.
Ideas:
Residential expenses might have been affected by inflation too as inflation seems to be in all sectors now in Japan.
As inflation continues to seep into all areas of life in Japan is not a surprise that overall household spending decreased 2.1 percent.
As Japan is not as spend crazy like other advanced economies it's a surprise that the decrease was only 2.1 percent.
But then today's young generation society might not be as eager to spend as the earlier generations were.
As maybe they think spending is just important for their lives and the previous generations might have thought saving more and spending less was more important.
The generations today have more opportunities and more chances to move and spend more freely compared to the previous generations.
Of course there are positives and negatives in each era or each generation. While the previous generations might have had more job security with so-called life-time employment, the present generation might feel the same security and they might not spend as freely or as much as the previous generation.
Only a small percentage of the Japanese working population, or even in many advanced societies, today work for large companies that offer life-time employment, as many now are contract workers, par-time workers, or work for companies that can't afford to pay the same benefits as large companies.
Have a nice day and be safe!
